Our living room has shedso much weight, and yet somehow, it gainedso much more seating! It started earlier this year, when I suggested to Scott that I was maybe-kind-of-sort-of feeling like we needed to lighten things up. After Lucy was born, we spent the majority of our time upstairs, bouncing between her nursery and studio-slash-living-turned-play-area. It was a habit that started to stick during the first month of her life, as a way to wind down from the day and begin our evening routine with a newborn. We would turn the lights on low, read books and, after putting Lucy down for the night, we'd stay nearby and relax to a movie (or endlessFriends reruns, let's be real).

It may seem strange, but with the exception of using our kitchen, we stopped hanging out in our main living room almost altogether. And when wedid hang out on the first floor, it suddenly felt too formal. It no longer fit 'us.' I loved every piece on their own (we will always love you, blue sofa!), but we craved a refresh. For months, we playedpretend, and we'd ask each other, What would you do different?A lighter couch, for one. Lower end tables, maybe. Could we swap out the chairs? And then I suggested the idea of a deep, low sectional. We knew that would eliminate one chair completely, but what if we could find an L-shaped sofa? And would it wrap around the room by the window, or should it separate the living and dining?

We started to collect fabric swatches from all over, and after testing wine and coffee spills on the Gaba Pearl White swatch from Article (they came right out with a spritz of water mixed with dish soap!), we were sold. We'd been eyeing the Gaba it for a while but almost counted it out – because a family with two dogs and a baby can't possible have a cream colored sofa, right? And then we tested the fabric swatch by scraping a push pin across it (to simulate kitty claws, as one does), and itstill held up. Magic fabric, we say!

The Gaba comes into three neutral colors – Pearl White, Gull Gray and Petrel Gray – with a low profile and extra deep seats, similar to our Tree House sofa! It's modular and can be configured to fit so many needs, and after landing on a design that would include (from left to right) a left arm chair, lounge chair, corner chair, and around the bend, an additional lounge chair, we taped it out directly onto the rug to make sure it would fit. Ordering a sofa online without sitting on it first can definitely feel like a risk, but we love that Article has a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Although we already own and love the Article Mello sofa for Tree House, we like having that knowledge in our back pocket – just in case. Luckily, any fears we may have had vanished at first sight; the Gaba is so handsome.

Before deciding on our final configuration, we went back and forth for a few weeks on whether the leg of the 'L' should back up against the windowor the dining room. Because the back is low, I think we would have been fine either way, but we think the winning layout is, well, a winner! There's plenty of room to move throughout the room (even in our skinny Chicago home), and although the Gaba is 3′ wider than the blue sofa, we cleared up an insane amount of visual clutter by eliminating our old end tables completely. The room feelsso open!

The quality of our Mello sofa is top notch, so we shouldn't have been surprised that the same is true for the Gaba. The individual pieces connect together with sturdy clips, which was on Scott's Must List for a sectional. We would describe the seat cushions as firm, whereas the back cushions are more fluffy and soft. Because the backs are down-filled, they can be fluffed up to look perky and new, even after an hours-long move night. All the cushions – seat and back – are loose with a nice weight to them, and the covers can be zipped off, if necessary!

The fabric is thick with a soft, pearlescent sheen, and there's enough texture in the weave to prevent it from feeling too precious. It was one of the reasons why we felt comfortable moving forward with a cream colored sofa! Our Gaba has already experienced a pet mess (or two), and just like our sample swatch, they cleaned right up with mild dish soap and water.

We also swapped in this coffee table, which we first stumbled upon in person while shopping during our anniversary trip. The top swivels away for hidden storage, and we couldn't shake it from our minds. We purchased it online a few weeks later during a big sale, and inside, we store our remotes, coasters and toys for Lucy. I tossed these teething beads on the top, and we usually stash our instant photos on the media center! We might still put a skinny console along the back of the couch by the window, too, but it would be lower than the back of the couch.

The way we live in our home has changed so drastically, it's almost hard to imagine this room configured any other way! We've been teaching Lucy how to safely get off the couch by getting on her belly and sliding down feet first, and she now thinks it's thefunniest thing in her world. She'll wait until we're watching and get on the couch just to slide off, and we laugh every time. There's enough floor space to spread out and play, and the extra deep seats feel like such a lounge-y treat. We pile up the pillows and cuddle together, and it really warms our hearts to see this room being realized! It may sound silly to say, but it feels the best it ever has.
